Growing strawberries in a pot is actually very simple and a great way to ensure that your fruit is all organic and doesn’t contain any harsh chemicals or pesticides.
Tips for Growing Strawberries in Pots
1. Pot size
Choose a pot that is at least 6″ deep with a drainage hole. Strawberries need well drained soil. Also, you can select a pot that is light colored. This will help keep the plant’s roots cool in the summer.
2. Soil and Location
Strawberries prefer a loose, loamy soil with a pH between 5.3 and 6.5 (acidic). Place your strawberry pot in a sunny location with 6-8 hours of sun per day and keep the soil consistently moist. Pots tend to dry out much more quickly than garden beds, so check them daily. Moisture is the key to plump, juicy berries.
3. Watering
Strawberries do not respond well to soggy soil. Let the soil in the pot dry slightly before watering. A good way to determine if the plants need water is to stick a finger into the soil about an inch, if it feels dry, it is time to water the plants. Checking the plants at least once a week is a good idea. Keep in mind however that during hotter days, the potted plants will require more water, so check them more frequently.
4. Fertilizing
Feed your strawberries once a year with organic granulated fertilizer.
5. Harvesting
Harvest your strawberries as soon as they are ripe, and remove any rotted fruit or yellowing leaves as you see them.
