5 Things About Maine Coon Cats. This breed is known as the “Gentle Giant”. Easy-going, affectionate and friendly, the Maine Coon cats personality is mostly pleasant, enough to make a pet owner “purr” with warmth.

They are the most kept cats in United States and are considered as the second most popular cat breed.

5 Things About Maine Coon Cats

1. History of the Main Coon

The Maine Coon is America’s native longhaired cat. A widespread belief is that this breed originated from a mating between semi-wild domestic cats and raccoons. This myth bolstered by the bushy tail and most common coloring (Brown Tabby), led to the name Maine Coon. According to another legend, the breed can be traced to 6 pet cats belonging to Marie Antoinette that were smuggled out of France during the French revolution. The most probable ancestors of the Maine Coon are cats that accompanied European colonists when they came to North America.

Whatever the true nature of their beginnings, New Englanders were proud of their “All American” cat.

They are the most kept cats in United States and are considered as the second most popular cat breed.

2. Main Coon Coat

One of the factors for the Maine Coon’s survival was it’s coat. The glossy coat is shaggy, water resistant, and almost maintenance free, just a good brushing once or twice a week is all that is required to keep it in top condition.

3. They are Big

Maine Coons Are Some of the Biggest Cats out There. This cat breed usually have muscular, broad chests and long rectangular bodies. Males average 15-17 pounds, with some reaching 25 pounds or more, and females average 12 pounds. They may not reach full size until they are about four years old. These cats take quite a long time to reach maturity. They take almost 4 years to become completely adult.

4. Personality

A male Maine Coon is more sociable than a female. Physically, a male Maine Coon is bigger and goofier one compared to the female. A female Maine Coon is said to be more intelligent but more wary of strangers. This cat breed can adapt easily to a dog in the house. Generally calm and friendly, a Maine Coon may eventually see the dog as another source of attention and even play with it like it would with a fellow cat. This friendliness, of all it’s personality traits, makes the Maine Coon a great pet for almost any family.

5. They are Very Affectionate

Maine Coon cat is not just an ordinary lap cat. While it loves petting it does look for other ways of showing it’s affection like following it’s owner around and even playing with him or the children.
