6 Health Benefits of Almonds During Pregnancy. Pregnancy Resource Center noted that, when a woman becomes pregnant, she has to take a lot of care to eat the correct foods to ensure proper growth of the fetus. Naturally, we wonder the health benefits of almonds during pregnancy. It is not surprising that regular consumption of almonds during pregnancy is extremely beneficial to both the mother and the child. Knowing the health benefits of eating almonds will make you love to include these nuts in your daily diet.

Almonds already enjoy the status of a super food across many countries and cultures. They are loaded with protein, fiber, iron, zinc, vitamins A, B6, and E, calcium, manganese, magnesium, copper, folic acid and riboflavin. The nutritional strength is the major factor that makes almonds a super food. Almonds are packed with great nutrients essential for the mother, and the growth and development of the baby.

There are a lot of theories about what and what not to eat during pregnancy. The only reason you should avoid almonds during pregnancy is if YOU are allergic to them. Whether raw or soaked, you can have up to one oz, which equals one-third of a cup or approximately 23 almonds, as per the USFDA. But, do consult a doctor before increasing the number of almonds because having too many of them might lead to some side-effects.

6 Health Benefits of Almonds During Pregnancy

1. Supplies Iron To Your Baby

1 oz of almonds contains 1.1 mg of iron, which meets 6% of your daily iron requirements. As iron requirement is high during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, you will surely get it from the daily consumption of this nuts.

2. Helps maintain a healthy weight

More than half of women during pregnancy gain weight, because, during pregnancy, women are carving even on foods they had never touched before, increasing the risk of gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy), high blood pressure and late toxicities. However, almonds can help. A new study by scientists in California, found that eating 60 grams of almonds a day increases the safety of pregnancy, reduces appetite and helps maintain a healthy weight throughout the pregnancy.

3. Dry Skin

During pregnancy, hormonal changes can have an effect on skin all over the body. Many women will experience acne breakouts, particularly on the face, upper back or chest. These same women will often complain of dry skin on other parts of the body, such as the arms and legs. In addition, as the uterus grows, skin on the abdomen is subjected to stretching, which can also lead to an uncomfortably dry, tight feeling. Dry, stretched skin can also contribute to stretch mark formation. Almond oil is an ideal emollient for any part of the body during pregnancy. It may be most beneficial to apply the oil to damp skin after a bath or shower.

4. Good Source of vitamin E

Almonds also have a high content of vitamin E, which also protects children from asthma when the mom-to-be consumes it during pregnancy.

5. Good Source of Folic Acid

These delicious nuts are one of the best natural sources of folic acid. So pregnant women can munch on them for the proper development of the fetus. It will greatly help the brain and neurological system of the unborn baby. Folic acid is also essential to prevent neural tube defects in the baby. Pregnant women normally need about 400 micro grams of folic acid daily.

6. Enhances Metabolic Response

When it comes to high-risk pregnancies, like in the case of obese or diabetic women, you don’t want to take any chances. Research has shown that babies of such women are at greater risk for obesity and metabolic disorders later in life. Almonds provide a healthy source of dietary fat and carbs. They reduce oxidative stress, inflammation, and blood sugar.

Almonds are excellent during pregnancy, not just for mom-to-be, but also for their unborn babies. So indulge in the goodness of this healthy nut for a healthy baby and you.
